Europe’s biggest ice cream plant Langnese-Iglo (within the Unilever group) in Heppenheim, Germany, was converted from monopropylene glycol to Temper in 1999. They also converted from ammonia direct expansion to indirect cooling the ice cream with Temper-40 in 2001 and 2002. The reduction of ammonia filling was from 1910 litre ammonia to 154 litre (92%). Total cooling capacity of 1.36 MW.
When changing from Antifrogen L (MPG) a great reduction in energy consumption was achieved – see table below. This is due to the excellent thermal properties of Temper allowing lower pressure drop, smaller heat transfer surfaces and smaller pumps.
The Unilever ice cream plant in Heppenheim produces 150 million litre of ice cream every year!
Since Temper is non-toxic Unilever is of the opinion that the product is safe for use in all its facilities.

From the given values, one can calculate the pressure drop to be 10x larger for MPG, which means that the energy consumption in pumps can be estimated to be significant more than 10x larger.
