Analysis

Temper Technology may assist you with different types of analysis to make sure the system and fluid is running as expected. We perform analysis of the heat transfer fluids such as:

  • pH value
  • Density indicating the freezing point
  • Concentration of metal ions / corrosion products
  • Concentration of corrosion inhibitor
  • Others

When sending a sample to Temper Technology for analysis, be sure to use a clean bottle that is not fragile or could be damaged during transportation (use a plastic bottle for example). Fill the clean bottle (holding at least 300 ml) with the heat transfer fluid from a suitable spot in the plant, like for instance an overflow valve. To get rid of any dirt and slag in the valve it is recommended to throw the first of the fluid down the sink and after that fill the bottle full.

Some analysis is possible to perform directly at site yourself, like density (freezing point), pH value and of course visually check-up. To be able to compare the fluid to discover any changes visually it is recommended to take a reference sample of the heat transfer fluid, this is taken before charging the system. A reference sample of the heat transfer fluid will easily help discover any changes in color or possible particles in the fluid and be a help for future maintenance.

To make sure the system is well functioning and to ensure the fluids condition, it is recommended to regularly check the fluid. This is easily done by comparing the fluid visually with the reference sample taken before filling the system and by checking the pH and density. It is recommended that in addition to this perform a complete analysis of the fluid at least once every year; this includes pH, density, concentration of corrosion inhibitors and metal ions/corrosion products.

Density measurement equipment specially adapted to Temper Technology’s heat transfer fluids can be ordered from Temper Technology for your own measurements. The equipment contains a density meter, a so-called aerometer, 1.000-1.300 g/ml, test cylinder 250 ml, thermometer –10 to +60°C and a density table valid for a liquid temperature at +20°C, i.e. a tempered liquid. The aerometer (can be ordered from Temper Technology or your retailer) is an easy to use instrument for checking density in fluids, which corresponds to given freezing point. Read the value on the aerometer where the scale crosses the fluid surface. Since the density is varying with the temperature aero metres are normally calibrated at a certain temperature, usually + 20°C. Use the thermometer to ensure that the fluid temperature is approximately + 20°C. See the picture below.

If the freezing point deviates more than 5°C from the nominal value it is recommended to adjust the freezing point. If the pH value deviates with more than 0.5 (pH <7.5 or pH >9.5) from the nominal value the pH balance has to be adjusted. Contact Temper Technology for advice.

Temper has excellent heat capacity and heat transfer properties, which means reduced liquid flows and – consequently – smaller dimensions. The installation costs will in other words be lower than if a glycol based product was used as heat transfer fluid.
Rinse with water and wipe the surface dry at once. If needed use a soft brush before rinsing with water. Make sure to examine the reason for the spillage and correct the problem as soon as possible, as leakage means entrance of air in the system.
